DESCRIPTION
Explore this seldom visited lake and the surrounding mountains, vistas and wildlife. Chikuminuk Lake is over 15 miles long to the east and west with two extensive fingers to the north. A 5 to 7 day trip is a perfect amount of time to explore the lake. Paddle from the deep blue waters of the eastern shores into the turquoise bays of the glacial fed inlets. Even though Chikuminuk Lake is only 600 feet above sea level, this higher lake is above the timber line. On the eastern shores are scattered spruce trees with open tundra, willows and low scrub brush. The western part of the lake is encompassed by mountains with few trees and open terrain. This lake offers excellent day trekking with a variety of available day hikes - from gentle sloping hills to rugged and dramatic ridges - which are easily accessed. This is caribou country and caribou trials provide for easier walking.
Caribou should be plentiful throughout most of the summer. Moose and Brown Bears inhabit the area around the lake, but are not as plentiful as the caribou. The open slopes and valleys expose a variety of smaller wildlife along with Arctic Loons, waterfowl and raptor's. The lake has an abundant population of Lake Trout and Char which provide some sportfishing opportunities and a tasty entree for those who like fish. Chikuminuk Lake is incredibly beautiful, its entire setting is awesome and grabs hold of anyone who visits leaving a lasting impression.
