The Wood-Tikchik State Park encompasses 1.6 million acres of one of Alaska's most beautiful and seldom explored wildernesses. Recognized as one of Alaska's outstanding wilderness-recreation areas, the Wood-Tikchik region was once considered for inclusion in the National Parks System, instead the State of Alaska selected these lands in 1961 as rights granted under the Statehood Act. The Wood-Tikchik State Park was created in 1978 to protect fish and wildlife habitat.
The "Tikchik Lakes" are the 6 northern most lakes in the park, creating a separate eco-system from the lower Wood-River Lakes System. Home to moose, caribou, black & brown Grizzly Bears, raptures and other wildlife, these lakes extend over 20 miles from the awesome fjords in the west to the Tikchik River Basin to the east.
Located 250 miles from the nearest connecting roads, the only access is by bush plane. The remoteness and logistical difficulties have kept the Tikchik Lakes a pristine wilderness visited by few and have made it Alaska's best kept secret - for a true wilderness experience.
